As I write this, the year is drawing to a close; the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness is ending, bonfires and fireworks have come and gone, and it is time to reflect on what has gone before and on what is to come. This has been a mixed bag of a year, cold and wet, warm and dry – what a mixture – and in some areas absolutely diabolical! Unprecedented rain and flooding has led to wrecked houses, destroyed livelihoods and crops washed away or too wet to lift and rotting in the ground, and some loss of life. This could be a year that many people are glad to see the back of, and, as I write this, election information is being pushed through
the door. You could easily get depressed – but don’t!
You are invited to a birthday party! There will be jelly and ice-cream, cakes and candles and all sorts of goodies. And whose birthday party is it? Well, it’s
ours of course. The National Allotment Society is 90 years old. How are you going to celebrate? Are there any societies out there that are also 90 years old?
My own society is relatively young, only founded on 30th March 1954, although the allotment site is much older. We will be doing our show, plant sales, open

days and mid-summer rounders match, and we are going to link in with our local health walk groups from doctor’s surgeries, just to advertise who and where we are.
So, how is your site going to celebrate our 90th birthday party? Get planning, and send any details to your regional representatives, invite dignitaries along, get photos in the local paper, or even nationals.
