brassicas or onions, a higher nitrogen fertiliser can be used. A fruit crop such as tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers will need a high potash feed. And the root crops need higher phosphate fertilisers, although these tend to be happy with a balanced fertiliser.
Sow and plant your crops at the correct depth and water if dry. Try to sow thinly to save on thinning, but once they have germinated, check and thin them out if necessary. The distance apart will depend on which crop is being grown and the size of crop you are aiming for. Once your crops are growing, the main thing to do is to control the weeds by hoeing, hand weeding or forking out. If this
is carried out every 10 days, weeds will never become a problem. The removal of weeds is important as they compete with your crops for nutrients, water and light and will therefore reduce crop size. Weeds can also harbour some pests and diseases which can then infect your crop.
On the subject of pests and disease, it is important that you control these at the first sight as any damage caused will reduce the quality of your crops and affect your chances of winning.
