Clay Cross & Danesmoor Allotments Scarecrow Festival
Helen Percival
2019 saw our first ever scarecrow festival
at Clay Cross & Danesmoor Allotment society. It was received with mixed views but was a really good day. We had homemade cakes and biscuits, hot drinks and a raffle. The allotment office was a hive of activity, with members popping in throughout the day to support the event.
There was a fantastic array of scarecrows that were displayed on plots around the site. Members were enthusiastic about the design of their scarecrows. It was a vibrant time, with
the allotment having a real community feel to it. The winning scarecrow was Darby and Joan made by Alan and Heather Cornwell. As you can see, they have set the standard really high. Well done to you! Second prize went to Diane Walker, who created a land army girl and delicately painted her face onto a sack. Well done!
Another first for the society was the prize of a £25 gardening gift voucher for the most improved garden. This was unanimously won by Mr Tony Shemwell, who had worked really hard all year to clear and cultivate his plot. Great job Tony!
Overall this was a fantastic day with lots of members coming together, chatting and enjoying themselves. We hope to continue the scarecrow festival into future years and include ‘the biggest onion’ award. We are also considering other events such as a Macmillan coffee morning and a pumpkin night walk with a prize for the biggest pumpkin.
I would like to thank the members for their support with the scarecrow festival.

Snug bug chateau at Hurley Allotments Karin Cartwright
Lucas, the grandson of Gail and Pete Brown – plotholders at Hurley Allotments – has, with a little help from others, managed to produce an amazing ‘Snug bug chateau’. It is hoped to have occupants before too long!
Hurley Allotments, in North Warwickshire, are a relatively new site, having been set up by a number of local residents in 2010. With the help of North Warwickshire Borough Council for funding and Warwickshire County Council, who made available a suitable piece of land, the site opened in April 2011, and now the next generation are actively getting involved.
