NAS Tour
Why not join the NAS second Food Growing tour to Sri Lanka – November 2020?
Here’s your opportunity to join a group of allotmenteers on a tour of the beautiful island of Sri Lanka.
Set in the Indian Ocean south of India, it is comfortably warm at this time of year. There you will find out about their crops and growing practices, as well as enjoying a welcoming culture. Many of the vegetables grown you will already grow at home, so there will be a lot to talk about.
We will make a fascinating visit to a fish market to see the catch being landed
in small boats. The market is vast, and you will watch as fish are laid out to dry in the sun as well as fresh fish sellers at their stalls.
Some visits are to research stations
to learn how developments have been made in growing coconuts and a whole variety of vegetables. We are shown round by experts, who are pleased to answer any questions you may have.
When we visit a commercial farm, you can get hands on; harvesting crops, preparing them and working with skilled chefs to prepare a meal. The reward is to sit down together and enjoy the fruits of your efforts. On our previous trip everyone really enjoyed this experience.
The cultural aspects of Sri Lanka are not ignored, and we visit ornate temples and enjoy a colourful dance show in
elaborate costumes. The historic walled town of Galle has a picturesque test cricket ground and a maze of narrow streets that you can explore at leisure. Look out for the snake charmer!
Wildlife is prolific with many colourful birds. A safari in Yala National Park may allow good views of elephants, sloth bears and possibly the rare leopard. I have been lucky enough to see all three on two previous visits.
Accommodation throughout the entire tour is of a very high standard. Rooms are clean and comfortable, always providing en suite facilities. There is always a wide choice of food – not always spicy – with many hotels offering an extensive buffet menu for all meals.
