Regiment plays a vital role in dealing with the immediate aftermath and restoring some normality through opening transport links, securing the prison / detention centre and providing cross island communications.
The second issue is border security, TCI has unstable nations to its south, this leads
to the regiment conducting daily patrols. With such small numbers and minimal formal military training this is a big task, one which the regiment tackles head on. In support of the Police, Immigration and Maritime Police, TCI is the only British Overseas Territory with a regiment that is operational 24/7.
In addition to the PSI, the UK commitment is one STTT per year to train new recruits and continuation training for the serving Marines. During the final exercise last year, the Marines chanced upon a group of smugglers and detained the individuals plus seized drugs, money, and weapons. It wasn’t until the UK STTT arrived that they realised this was not
a training serial and they had in fact made their first detention and seizure, all with de-commissioned weapons.
The Regiment are new, but keen to develop and to succeed, it is a unique experience
for me as their PSI and great that they have identified The Rifles as the exemplars they wish to emulate.
