National Allotment Society AGM 2020
Our 90th Anniversary AGM will be held on 6th June 2020 at Mercure Leeds Parkway Hotel, Otley Road, Leeds LS16 8AG. Please see letter that came with this magazine and NAS website for details.
Gardening to save the Planet
Professor Dave Goulson argues that gardens and allotments could play
a significant part in helping us to produce food more sustainably,
while at the same time restoring biodiversity and protecting nature.
His recently published book ‘The Garden Jungle: or Gardening to Save the Planet’, contains research that suggests allotments are, in many cases, more productive than industrial farming. Find out more at www. penguin.co.uk/books/111/1117058/the- garden-jungle/9781787331358.html.
National Garden Scheme
Lots of allotment sites opened for the National Garden Scheme this year – did you know that the NGS is a charitable project supporting Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK and The Queen’s Nursing Institute? If you are interested in opening your site, speak to one of the NGS team by calling 01483 211535 or email: hello@ngs.org. uk.p.

The copy of Leisure Gardener you feature in the advert was the second colour copy that I edited when I was Publicity Officer for the Society. Before this, it was
an A5 black and white produced by Head Office.
I have been away from active allotment work now for about 10/12 years but still take a interest in what goes on as a sleeping President of the South East Region. I was Regional Rep and Publicity Officer for about 5 years before taking on Regional Rep and Conference Organiser which unfortunately I had to give up due to
ill health of my husband. In total, from local secretary through county, regional and national levels I gave 23 plus years of service to the Society. I cannot believe it is 90 years old.

 Strulch – Introduce the
benefits of mulching to
your plot!
My husband Geoff invented Strulch at Leeds University.
We have been selling it since 2005 and it has grown in popularity because it is a quality organic product with a neural pH that works on all soil types. It can be used anywhere in the garden including vegetables plots. Strulch works by blocking light which is needed for germination and the texture of Strulch together with added minerals deters slugs and snails.
Add to bare soil to stop weed germination and around plants when they reach a good size. We sell in bulk 12, 25 and 48 bags and you can buy 100 litre bags from our stockists.
Find out about Strulch on our website – www.strulch.co.uk or give me a call (01943 863610).
Happy cultivating. Jackie Whiteley
