  Update from Newlands Lane Allotments
We held our second open day on Sunday 18th August to correspond with National Allotments Week. We have been busy over the last few months with visits from the local infant’s school, care home residents and local television (Border). The heritage fruit tree and wildflower garden exceeded expectations, the school children were amazed in the transformation since they scattered the seeds and planted the trees. The overall look of this previously neglected plot is truly amazing, turning around the plot and gaining something to please all, with the added bonus of being a low- maintenance project.
We followed this success with a round of funding applications to the National Lottery Community Fund and The Dulverton Trust, both of which proved successful, allowing us to go ahead with the planned purchase of an eco-friendly toilet – something the site, after nearly one hundred years as a recognised allotment site, plotholders and visitors alike deserved. The installation of the toilet took three full days with numerous helpers on hand to assist, but the
hard work and the finished product, which will provide years of service and becomes a legacy for future generations of gardeners and visitors alike, has been deemed worthwhile. We invited
the Workington Mayor (Mrs J King) and National Lottery Community Fund local officer (Amelia Nicholson) to officially open the facility. The plotholders provided a wide range of very delicious foods and drinks to support the open day. The event was judged to be a success by all those who attended despite the poor weather.
We are not planning to rest on our laurels and are currently working
on a number of initiatives to further enhance the site, as with gardening in general, there is always something
The overall look of this previously neglected plot is truly amazing
new to try, to improve on and enjoy the opportunities provided. The committee and plotholders of Newlands Lane Allotments would like to take the opportunity to thank all those who have supported us in achieving so much in a short space of time.
