The Free Spirit Horse Memorial project was launched in 2014 as the First World War Centenary Partnership started its programme to mark the outbreak of the war and culminated in 2018 to mark the centenary anniversary of WW1. The memorial is a life sized bronze statue situated at the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas.
The role of the horse through history has been an important part of the projects aim to educate and enlighten those of all ages regarding the role these admirable animals have played not only in times of conflict, but in building thriving businesses and the creation of successful industry in our country.
Free Spirit is bringing the essential contribution that the horse has made to man-kind to new audiences and generations. Since the introduction of motorised vehicles, the presence of the horse within society has diminished. Free Spirit recognises that the unique relationship between horse and human can increase confidence and self-esteem, and the nurturing and development of this wonderful connection leaves a legacy that continues to bring joy to this and future generations.
This accolade to the horse is the only memorial the NMA has granted to an animal in its own right.
The memorial expresses endurance, service and partnership and represents quiet determination and trust, inspiration for which came from young people. The project brings together individuals from all ages and backgrounds sharing the importance of the horse to different generations, races, ethnicities and religions. The groundwork has been carefully designed to welcome all visitors, regardless of mobility or disability, allowing all members of society to enjoy the memorial together. A non-slip, wheelchair friendly path allows smooth access for
those with decreased mobility, as well as offering those with visual impairment a distinct, definable entrance and exit to the memorial. The provision of spaces between the seats creates multiple points of access for wheelchair users, a lower plinth height and plaques incorporating Braille and Makaton allow the visually impaired to enjoy the memorial through a tactile experience.
The Free Spirit Horse Memorial feels privileged to be given the opportunity to share the recognition of the horse’s unconditional qualities of companionship and loyalty with generations to come and this tribute also celebrates the horses that continue to serve us today through work, rehabilitation of the sick and disabled, education and of course the joy and pleasure they provide in leisure and sport.
The memorial was installed and unveiled in May 2019. A total of £107,000 was raised
by hardworking and committed volunteers and young people. The memorial requires ongoing bi-annual maintenance and cleaning and funds continue to be raised for this – any contribution will be greatly received.
