Born December 1933, died August 2019
Olympic athlete Basil Healey sadly passed away in August 2019 aged 85. Basil was a long distance runner who held the world marathon record and won a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 1964.
Basil Heatley was born in a farming family on Christmas day 1933 at Kenilworth in Warwickshire. Following National Service deferral because of his work on the farm, he joined the Royal Army Veterinary Corps aged 20 and served for 3 years in the Corps.
Sadly, he never kept a connection with the RAVC and very little more about his service is known.
