Listening to D-Day veterans was ‘powerful reminder of the human spirit’
A group from Medical Operational Support Unit (MOSU) led by Lt Col Sharon Stewart were privileged to visit the veterans’ residential home in Broughton, Lancashire on June 6, for the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
As we walked through the halls of the residential home, we were greeted by faces lined with the wisdom of age, yet bright with the spark of memories from that fateful day in 1944. It was an honour to meet ‘living legends’ who once stormed the beaches of Normandy, their bravery pivotal in shaping the course of history.
Among the distinguished guests were the Councillor Tanya Burch, Ceremonial Mayor of Salford and Mrs Diane Hawkins JP, LLB, Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester the Lord Lieutenant, whose presence underscored the significance of the event. Their presence underlined the respect and admiration we all felt to in commemorating the sacrifices made by these extraordinary men and women.
Many of the residents were veterans of D-Day and shared their stories, recounting their experiences with a mix of humility and pride. Listening to them, we were transported back to those critical moments on the beaches of Normandy. Their tales of camaraderie, resilience, and sheer determination were not just historical recounts but powerful reminders of the human spirit’s capacity to overcome adversity.
The day was further enlivened by musical performances that brought back the sounds of the 1940s, filling the air with nostalgia and joy. The veterans joined in, reminding us of the power of music to bridge the past and present.
The visit to the veterans’ home in Broughton was a commemoration of the past and a celebration of the enduring spirit of those who have served our country. It was a day for reflection, respect, and above all, a tribute to the heroes who have given us the gift of freedom. As we look to the future, we carry their

legacy with us, ever grateful for their sacrifice and inspired by their bravery.
As we concluded our visit, we left with a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices made by these incredible individuals. Lt Col Sharon Stewart encapsulated our collective sentiment perfectly by mentioning that their courage continues to inspire us all.
