Inter-Services Tennis Tournament 2012
After a previous defeat in 2011 it was time to face battle again in the 2012 Inter-Nursing Services Tennis Tournament. Sadly due to Operational Commitments the QARNNS were unable to raise a team so it was time once again to go head to head with the reigning champions the PMRAFNS in a bid to win the QARANC title back, which was last held 2007!!
Our sprightly team consisted of; Lt Col Suzie Greenwood
Lt Col Tess Grieves RRC (Capt) Maj Liz Hughes
Maj John Liddel Maj Tim Penny
Lt Laura Simpson
The day commenced with the Men’s and Ladies singles who both gave sterling performances. In the Ladies match Maj Liz Hughes got off to a convincing start winning the first set and cruised on into the second set for what looked like a convincing win,
but then the PMRAFNS suddenly found new vigour and went onto win the second set. All to play for the ladies battled it out in the third set and ended up providing some nail biting tennis and we were provided with an excellent performance from both sides, but in the end the PMRAFNS went onto win the match. The men’s singles saw a high standard of tennis played providing the spectators with some excellent competitive tennis and despite another gallant effort by Maj John Liddle he was robbed of a win narrowly losing to the PMRAFNS in two sets. It was all to play for after lunch in the Ladies and Mixed Doubles. Lt Col Grieves and Lt Col Greenwood teamed up to secure a convincing win in the Ladies Doubles but meanwhile on the adjacent court despite Maj Tim Penny and Lt Laura Simpson giving a valiant performance were sadly outplayed by the PMRAFNS losing in two sets so seeing an overall win of the tournament
by 3-1 to the PMRAFNS.
A great day was had by all and
thank-you to our kind supporters who faithfully cheered us on continually oozing encouragement from the side lines and congratulations to the PMRAFNS for regaining their title for another year and the QARANC will look forward to returning to RAF Halton in 2013 for a rematch!
Finally would like to bid fond farewell to Lt Col Greenwood this being her last appearance in the Inter-Services on retirement from the Army and take this opportunity to say a big thank-you for her years of commitment to the QARANC tennis team not only as a player but extended reign as Captain. We wish you well in your forthcoming retirement and your talent will be sorely missed.
I would like to thank the QA association for their financial contribution.
Lt Col Tess Grieves RRC
