22 EAGLE AND CARBINE
As another year rolls by the relentless routine of background activity continues to happen in order to sustain the Regiment. The normal unsung heroes churn out activity, spares, food, fuel, vehicles, repairs, med cover, and trawls to name but a few all with the same aim, ‘to enable’ The Sqn have been flung far and wide this last year with troops deployed to Germany, Northern Ireland, Poland, and all over the UK. We have supported events such as the Coronation of HM The King and Queen, Ex ARRCADE LEDGER in Sennelager, ranges in Bergen, Northern Ireland, Otterburn and Castlemartin. All of this done with a smile and the expected enthusiasm the Regiment have come to rely on from HQ Sqn.
Exercise ARRCADE LEDGER was the deployment of Command Troop and BGHQ to take part in the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps exercise in Sennelager in June. Much to the excitement of some of the older members of the Squadron who were looking forward to getting back to Germany to visit some old haunts and partake in a few refreshments downtown. The exercise was also a chance for BGHQ to test itself during a Command Post exercise watched over by the training Staff in Sennelager. This went very well, and they received a good solid report to take forward to the next event in Warminster later in the year. The exercise was a success for HQ Squadron and BGHQ and the long days in the CAST building were punctuated with trips to the NAAFI for ice cream as it was the height of the summer. The exercising staff run by BABCOCK contained a friendly face in the shape of Brigadier Hugh Blackman and the ARRC DCOS Brigadier Jonathan Biggart. On completion of the exercise most of the deployed troops had at least one occasion to visit the local area and trips to the Therme, Brauhaus, Bayern Munich Stadium
were organised. Some of the more adventurous even made trips to Berlin and Dortmund. BGHQ ventured out to sample the night life of Sennelager and in one particular bar which refused to sell ‘Jägerbombs’ the barman was outsmarted by the wickedly clever Intelligence Officer Capt Jack Scrutton who saw an opportunity and exploited this rule by ordering all the ingredients separately. Upon realisation of this the barman loudly proclaimed the IO to be a “Sneaky Boi” and so started his new nickname and the phrase of the trip.
Whilst sat in the Lancashire Cookhouse for lunch on Saturday 17th of June the Commanding Officer mentioned it would be cool to be in Waterloo the following day for the anniversary. This was given as an implied task and before 1500 there was a minibus of 9 heading for the Battlefield. The autobahn helped reduce the travel time and a night out was had before the Battlefield tour and visit to the
