                                    found themselves without a fight on the morning of the event due to a lack of suitable opponent in weight and ability. This is (I’m told) always the case to some extent in army boxing, there’s an unlucky few who miss out at each event although this was little consolation to the three who’d taken such pains to be fight ready. They took it on the chin and got behind the remainder of the team.
The event itself was spectacular. Set up expertly by SSgt Sansom in one of the hangers, with lighting and sound kindly sponsored by Forces Mutual, and 400 baying soldiers fuelled by the pipes, walk on songs and Tenants. SCOTS DG made up one side and 2 Btn REME the other.
Our three boxers fought with every ounce of passion you would hope for from a SCOTS DG soldier and the match ups were excellent. LCpl Antwis won fight of the night for his efforts, and LCpl McGarry won both most valiant fighter and the inaugural presentation of the Gordy Adams trophy, awarded to the best SCOTS DG boxer. I never had the pleasure of meeting Sgt Gordy Adams before his passing in 2019, but I know many of the readers will have known him. He was by all accounts a boxing legend, as both boxer and coach, and in his memory the Warrant Officers’ & Sergeants’ Mess had a magnificent silver trophy commissioned.
