ASSOCIATION CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
Col C F Lambert
We have always prided ourselves on being a family Regiment with a bond that is not restricted to blood alone, although we still have strong connections in that department. Based on shared experiences that seem to repeat from generation to generation, we are bound together by a more powerful tribal connection. This year I have met up with many old friends, some I have not seen for decades, and on every occasion the years have been rolled away through shared memories, tribal kinship, and a sense of loyal service for the greater good.
In April the Association gathered in the Central Belt of Scotland, at a great venue in Whitburn. It proved to be everything and more in terms of reminding me of those powerful connections. Seeing Benny Bennett was a particular highlight, as he displayed the same strength and determination he has always shown, having got himself to
the event without help, no small achievement since an accident in Cyprus left him in a wheelchair. He and Dave Woolliscroft have always been great advocates of personal fitness and mental endurance, and his efforts that night displayed all the qualities I have looked up to for so long; a shining example indeed.
Golf is one of the greatest activities that unites the past and present of the Regiment, so it is to my great shame that I failed to attend the Association Golf Day that same weekend. I missed two very old friends I would love to have caught up with – Paul Wood and Grant Young but I was delighted to hear that they were still thick as thieves as ever they were in Sennelager. I now plan to make amends by putting aside my avoidance of Golf and challenging my old friend Rory MacLachlan for the ‘most golf ’ prize – I reckon I have this one in the bag!
