  Community Support Update
By Hayley Holden
As part of the continuation of ‘Bringing the RAF Wyton Community together’ project, funded by the Armed Forces Covenant, the following activities took place up to 31st March:
Picture This Competition
Wyton-on-the-Hill, Brampton residents and RAF Wyton Station employees were invited to take part in the ‘Picture This Competition.’ The aim was to capture the Community surroundings and send in one picture per household before the closing date on the 14th February. The Community Support Team received 20 entries, which were uploaded on to the Official RAF Wyton Facebook Page, where the most liked photograph by the end of the month, determined the winner of a Polaroid Camera. Second and Third place received their pictures professionally framed by a local framing company based in Abbots Ripton. In 1st place we had the squirrel captured in the snow by Victoria Bowers, in 2nd place we had an early morning Spring Sunrise by Emma Lawrence and in 3rd place we had the Alpaca’s in the field by Katy Bristow.
Nesting Boxes
As part of celebrating National Nest Box week, 14th-21st Feb, nest boxes were ordered and delivered to various collection points across RAF Wyton, Wyton-on-the-Hill and Brampton for those associated to Station to collect, decorate and locate in their gardens. A bird watch sheet was created which accompanied the nest boxes, to allow the Community to take part in birdwatching.
Colouring Pack
A February colouring pack was created and circulated.
Sunflower Packs
Sunflower packs were provided for individuals to display and grow outside their houses. This included a pack of sunflower seeds and a plant pot that were sourced from a local garden centre in Somersham, as we continue to support local businesses. One pack per household was provided and in return we asked for picture updates.
Virtual Adult Magic Show
A virtual Adult Magic show featuring Darren Delaney was presented on the 17th March at 2030hrs via zoom. This was for a duration of 45 minutes where several interactive magic tricks were performed. This left those watching equally amazed and impressed.
Clay Packs
Two clay making sessions were delivered on the 24th and 31st March via zoom for Easter. Clay packs, again, were sourced by a local company to allow the Community to get creative and try something new. Inside the packs contained a generous amount of clay, utensils and paint for decorating, which allowed many to form a pot alongside several Easter themed cut outs. During lockdown, each event since the beginning back in October, brought the Community together in some way, and has allowed many to try something new. Some excellent feedback has been received by the Community Support Team, and memories made by families and individuals despite the Covid restrictions. This wouldn’t have been achievable if it wasn’t for the initial funding by the Armed Forces Covenant, The Community Support Team co-ordinating each event and help from our volunteers, which we also wish to thank.
New Sessional Ben Youth Club Worker!
Hello my name is Arifa, I’m a mum of 3 and recently I’ve joined the wonderful team at Action for Children as a sessional ben club youth worker. A lot of my time is dedicated towards my children but the remaining time I hope I can spend wisely with the youth club children. I love Art and in particular drawing, so looking forward to lots of arts and crafts!
In working directly with children, I hope I can help them build life skills, develop healthy relationships and make decisions that are right for them. I also envisage the creating of a strong trusting relationship with young people, I think being able to build that trust is the key. Without trust, there can only
be a short-term improvement but with trust, young people feel safe to drop their defences and will not be scared to make mistakes.
I understand that I am not perfect and don’t have to be all the time but have the willingness to learn and grow.
