HOW DO YOU CAPTURE the essence of a year on ACSC in 90 pages? From the nervous laughter and clumsy introductions on day one, to
the hugs and tears of life-long friends parting company on the final day. No assortment of articles or photographs could fully express the range
of experiences shared in a year at JSCSC. When students from 56 different nations together with students from the Royal Navy, Army, Royal Air Force, and the Civil Service assembled in Shrivenham, the breadth of cultures, languages, and experiences collectively shaped our understanding
of the world. And when we stepped out of the UK to conduct exercises in 15 other countries, the value of ACSC became even more evident.
Whether it was our group efforts to conduct operational planning, learning to respond swiftly with a cuff and a BLUF, or hearing the impressive array
of academics, politicians, or business and military leaders in the Cormorant Hall Lecture Theatre, we have all reached the end of the course with a greater comprehension of our role in Defence.
In the following pages, you will find just a small collection of memories from a fantastic year of academic, social, sports and other events and activities at JSCSC. To celebrate the first century of
“
the RAF, this edition of The Cormorant opens with an insight into their genesis and dotted throughout the pages are personal reflections from ACSC21’s officers on what RAF100 means to them. Also in this magazine amongst the main articles, some of our international colleagues share their perspectives about ACSC and life in the UK.
On behalf of the editorial committee, I would like
to thank all of the authors and contributors to this edition of The Cormorant. I hope this publication is an enjoyable read and becomes a treasured yearbook for you all.
Antony Quinn, Editor.
