JSCSC Running Club Lt Col Rosco Noott
2017–18 PROVED A FANTASTIC season for the JSCSC Running Club with over 40 members training or racing for the College,
including Cdr Dan Thomas, Lt Col Rosco Noott, Lt Col James Bird, Wg Cdr Martin ‘Higgy’ Higgins and Lt Cdr Hugh ‘Salty’ Saltonstall
representing ACSC 21.
Race season opened with the Relay Championships at Aldershot where, despite the Secretary giving
the Chairman the wrong start time(!), the team managed to race in another category and record
a winning time to secure the overall Male Vets title. Pirbright followed in November where, despite a large, fast field of over 200 competitors running over undulating Surrey sand hills, the Male Team finished an impressive 7th overall. The season centred on the Southern Army Cross Country League, in which the Male Team finished 5th overall in the Minor Unit category and won the Male Vet Relays as well as displaying some notable individual performances along the way. Notably, the final race of the season took place at Colerne where the Male Team secured an impressive 2nd overall and Wg Cdr Higgins achieving an astounding 9th place individual finish!
More broadly throughout the season attendance
at Highworth Running Club and Swindon Harriers training meets has been superb with College runners venturing far and wide to tackle a variety of events ranging from the Original Mountain Marathon in
the Lakes to the Lanzarote International Marathon. Despite the enduring challenges of de-conflicting
the Course schedule and getting the runners to the start line, there was rarely a day without a runner on the DIAS or pictured in the Shrivenham Community News. Congratulations to all those who took part, either in the races or training. Keep running!

EXERCISE CORMORANT VELO 2018 saw a collection of 44 middle-aged wannabe cyclists cram their once chiselled, now slightly podgy
forms into optimistically small Lycra pants and shirts to attempt the 430km cycle from the Defence Academy to Normandy and back,
taking in some of the most beautiful scenery in Southern England and the beaches and battlefields of Normandy.
The weather was mostly kind, offering everyone a chance to get ridiculous cyclists’ tans, particularly
Lt Col Bruce Anderson (RM) who only managed to apply sun cream to
one arm and burnt through the slots in his helmet, finishing
day 1 looking something like Darth Maul.
By day 3 it was clear that there was insufficient adversity
for the Ex to be a proper military affair, so the weather stepped
in to make things a little more interesting. In what can only
be described as a monsoon, the cyclists set off for the
101km leg from Caen to Ouistreham. Everyone
managed to keep their sense of humour
(mostly) and by the end of the day the
