able to draw on the deeper military knowledge of the Regular. This provides a very rounded experience in the short time available. This is further enhanced by some excellent external speakers whose perspective and knowledge serve to broaden and deepen understanding, and in some cases, challenge our perspectives.
Of equal importance to the framework of DS and lecturers is bringing individuals together to share their collective experience. This broadens the experience immeasurably and the tri- service and multi-national nature of the course enables one to view the same issue from differing stand points. It brings with it
a great opportunity to network militarily which is bene cial to the organisation, collectively enabling
“
the sharing of expertise and knowledge. The diversity on a Reserve course in terms of background is extensive. There is also therefore the opportunity to network in the civilian sense too, broadening the base of those you are able to speak to for advice and/ or employment opportunities and being exposed to differing ways of approaching and solving problems gives you a broad selection of experiences to
draw from. Therefore, there is bene t here for the individual’s civilian career and the organisation the individual works for.
Finally, the capacity for simply enjoying each others’ company was not diminished by the intense and short nature of the stay in Shrivenham: every syndicate managed a social event and these ranged
from a black tie dinner held at an Oxford university college, to nights at the pub or cinema. All these were welcome diversions from the work. We also enjoyed a very successful dinner night that was well organised and executed, enabling us to air our mess dress which, in some cases appeared not to have seen the light of day for some time. It was humbling to see the amount of operational experience people have accrued over the past 20 years, re ecting the sel ess commitment of a great number of reservists.
ASCS (R) 8 was a rewarding experience. It
was challenging and fun in equal measure. The development of the mind was in evidence but, just as importantly it enabled the development of bonds of friendship and understanding.
