Britain in Bloom entry
categories are based on
the population number
on the electoral roll. This
means that Oundle would
be in the Town category
in the East Midlands
region. This region
comprises Derbyshire,
Nottinghamshire,
Lincolnshire,
Leicestershire,
Northamptonshire, and Rutland. We would be competing with experienced participants.
In our favour, judging takes place in July,
the same time as the Oundle Festival which is really great as there’s so much going on then and Oundle looks fantastic, especially if the Yarn Bombers have been out. The judges would be taken on a 2.5 hour tour of the town to visit the areas focused on and everything would need
to be top notch in terms of appearance, ie no weeds, litter or wilting flowers. If individuals, groups, or businesses want to get involved,
there are also special awards for best residential
garden, best school garden and best hotel/pub garden and best retail/ commercial premises.
Whether Oundle enters Britain in Bloom will depend on volunteers stepping up to help. Grants will also be applied for to raise funds. However, people could also help by
donating or offering resources no longer used like hanging baskets, large tubs, and greenhouse space; especially in the Spring when baskets are planted up to grow on until ready to hang out. With more resources and volunteers, we can make Oundle a cleaner and greener place to live and visit and who knows, perhaps win a RHS award.
