Get outside...
WINTER JOBS IN THE GARDEN
Getting out into the garden in the winter months not only keeps you fit and healthy but gives you the opportunity for a good tidy-up.
If you haven’t done it already, give your greenhouse and polytunnel a good soap and rinse inside and out. This will increase light levels and reduce the risk of disease. Whilst you tidy up your shed and check on supplies for next season’s seed sowing and cultivation take
a look at your tools. Clean any residue from the metal and give handles a wipe over, wooden ones could be oiled. Stored crops will need regular checks for mould and assault by rodents; dispose of any damaged items.
If you have clay soil a rough winter dig
will enable the frost to break up the clods. Composting will have slowed down but those autumn leaves can be collected and stored in wire containers or sealed black plastic bags.
Add some grass clippings or coffee grounds for nitrogen and ensure they remain damp. Finally, here is one of the best winter jobs – sitting with a cup of tea and dreaming about what new seeds and plants to try in the season to come. www.nsalg.org.uk
