Essex DA
By the time you’re reading this, we will hopefully have held our first couple of talks of 2022. One from Dr Peter Dawson from Tozer Seeds, and the other from Jason Ralph-Smith at Autopot Watering Systems. Thanks to everyone that attended those and also to Peter and Jason for giving up their time to come and talk to us.
For the remainder of 2022, we have the following events organised:
• Sunday 10 April: Mick Poultney talks on “A Year on the Plot”
• Sunday 8 May: John and Coral Bebbington talk on “Grow your Onions”
• Sunday 17 July: Essex DA Mini Show
• Sunday 16 October: Matt Oliver talks on “Growing Giant Pumpkins”
• Sunday 20 November: AGM
We hope to see lots of you there during the course of the year. We currently have a vacant Secretary position on our Essex DA committee. If anyone is interested in taking up this role, please get in touch.
For further information on Essex DA events, please contact Emily Plumb on emily.plumb@btinternet.com or Sherie Plumb on 01621 741787.

By the next issue, we will also have had a talk by Paul Jupp on Flower Meadow Creation, I am intrigued to learn more as from what I can fathom, the management of a flower meadow is quite an art. Hopefully there will be lots to report in the next issue.
On 12 April, David Thornton will travel down to give us a talk on Tomatoes. Again, David has been to us before, giving us valuable insight with his talks on Shallots and Seed Production. I have been growing my shallots following his advice ever since, and I am sure everyone will be as keen as
I am to learn more about tomatoes. If SV arrives before this event, please do come and join us at Sherfield English Village Hall, SO51 6FL. Our evening talks are at 7.30pm.
At the present time, we have just received a planting list for the allotment at BBC Gardeners’ World Live Spring Fair at Beaulieu 29 April – 1st May 2022. Hants DA helped build and staff the allotment last year, along with running the NVS stand. This year, we have both the info and the time to grow the same plants that will be on the allotment, so that visitors to the show can take their favourite varieties home to grow themselves.
Our Hants DA plant sale will be two weeks after Beaulieu, on 14th May. We
will be back at Wellow Village Hall, SO51 6BR for this event. It will be like old times being at Wellow, as last year’s plant sale was a blustery but fun affair in Romsey Market as the hall was closed due to covid restrictions. I am sure the Brown family will never forget that day in the market, they
valiantly held on to the gazebo all day as it threatened to blow away the entire time.
We are looking for help with growing plants for both Beaulieu and our May plant sale, so please get in touch if you can give us a hand with this.
But even if you have a few surplus plants left over from growing your own, we would welcome them to sell at both events to raise funds for the DA. We have been unable to do any fundraising during Covid, so need to kick start our money- spinning activities again. This will ensure we can continue putting on events for our members and supporters to enjoy.
Now that we have confidence our events will go ahead, please find the year’s programme below.
Unless otherwise stated, meetings are held at 7.30pm @ Sherfield English Village Hall, Salisbury Road, Sherfield English, Romsey SO51 6FL.
We look forward to welcoming you.
