This year 2024 has been another bustling period for our Reg- imental SPS detachment, marked by significant changes in our personnel. Throughout the year, we have navigated through numerous transitions, welcoming new faces and bidding farewell to long-serving members. This dynamic environment has fostered growth and adaptation within our team, as we continue to meet the challenges ahead. We have also taken part in the implementation of our new way of working under the Pers Admin Capability Review, utilising the Central Hub and the merging of the Regimental Accountant and Financial Systems Administrator into the Unit Accountant role.
The life of an SPS soldier is one of constant change as we move Units often, this does have its advantages as new people bring innovative ideas and experience to the betterment of the Regi- ment. This year we have said goodbye to valued team members; Sgt Stickland left her post as the Regimental Accountant to join HQ ARRC, Sgt Johnson moved on promotion to SSgt with 7 Regt RLC, Pte Hendy departed for 30 Sig Regiment, Pte Shapland moved to 1 RRF and lastly Pte Moses moved on promotion to LCpl to 28 Engineer Regiment. Losing Detachment members leads to gaining new team members and these instances are certainly no exception we have benefited from; Cpl Kachale from HQ ARRC, Pte McLean as a voluntary transfer from KRH and Pte Boakye joining from Worthy Down on completion of Phase 2 training.
Throughout the past year we have had plenty of opportunities for members of the Detachment to deploy on various Opera- tions; Cpl Klass in support of B Battery on Op CABRIT, who was replaced by LCpl Williams deploying with A Battery the Chestnut Troop. LCpl Sankey and Pte McLean have deployed in support of Op LAZURITE assisting with the information management of entitled personnel in two different sites. Also, LCpl Sankey deploying on Op LIGHTFOOT in Sennelager, Germany assisting with the administrative support for those Personnel, performing maintenance on various platforms that were moved from Canada to Germany. Lastly Sgt Warner deploying on Op ALUMINIUM in Poland providing administrative assistance to service personnel supporting the Ukrainian war effort. Capt Coxon had the unique opportunity for a trawl to Oman, assisting the British Embassy. The Department has supported the Regiment in a few exercises with some detachment members being deployed out with their respective Battery’s; LCpl Sankey and Pte Hendy deployed in support of Ex IRON TITAN, conducting Personnel tracking for
all involved from West down camp across various Units. Also, Pte Shapland deployed with Chestnut Troop and had plenty of opportunity to be involved within the Battery, broadening his knowledge outside his usual role.
With training at the forefront of everything we do, we are committed to the continuous development of our team members. Through- out the year, they have participated in a wide array of specialised courses designed to enhance their skills and knowledge. Addition- ally, our weekly detachment training sessions have provided regu- lar opportunities for hands-on practice and team building, ensur- ing that we maintain a high level of preparedness and cohesion within the Unit. Sgt Gowen completed the new Unit Accountant course covering non-public and public funds. Cpl Gurung in fulfill- ing his new acting role complete the Personnel Support Supervi- sor course at Worthy Down. Cpl Kachale also recently completed their Staff Support Supervisor course being responsible for admin- istration of service discipline. Pte Moses successfully completed her LCpl ALDP course on selection for promotion.
Despite a busy year, members of the Detachment have seized numerous opportunities. Pte Rai has actively participated in Bra- zilian Ju-Jitsu. Sergeant Warner, who holds instructor qualifica- tions, has been actively participating in skydiving over the year. Her expertise and passion for the sport have not only enhanced her skill but demonstrated an inspiration to detachment mem- bers, to be more involved in the adventurous training opportuni- ties available. Even with their demanding schedules, the detach- ment has made time for team-building activities. We enjoyed friendly competition go-karting at Thruxton track where Sgt Gowen triumphed in the super prix. The day concluded with a visit to Spuntino restaurant in Amesbury.
Members of the Detachment have been honoured to receive a number of awards, WO2 Challand received a CO’s coin to rec- ognise his extraordinary efforts in covering four challenging roles simultaneously. Also, Cpl Gurung received a CO’s coin in recog- nition of their hard work throughout the year stepping up into the Personnel Support Supervisor in Sgt Warners absence. LCpl Sankey was nominated for AGC (SPS) apprentice of the year and came runner up as one of four SPS soldiers who received a Dis- tinction in their level 3 Business Administration qualification. LCpl Sankey was also nominated for the Army apprentice of the year award coming runner up in the Level 3 advanced award category.
