 1st Regiment Royal Horse Artillery
This year’s golfing season has been a challenge for the Regiment due to ongoing operational commitments. This in turn has dramatically reduced the availability of golfers for key events. However, it has not been without success, specifically on an individual basis. The key highlight being the Royal Artillery winning the 50th Inter Corps Cham- pionships at the brilliant Saunton Golf Club in Devon. The Gunner side was led to victory by team captain WO2 (BSM) Ramage of L (Néry) Battery. A second title in the space of 3 years for the Gunners, the last coming in 1997. Both of those winning teams had 1RHA representation, cementing a strong history of 1RHA participation in Gunner Golf. This year’s vic- tory was made even more precious with the Gunners beat- ing arch-rivals the Sappers in the final, who were widely picked as favourites for the competition. On route to victory, the Gunners also defeated the RLC, AGC and REME before being crowned champions.
Elsewhere, the Regiment had participation across key Gun- ner events such as: Autumn Meet (Matfen Hall Golf Club), Spring Meet (Tidworth Garrison Golf Club) and the Royal Artillery championships (Thonock Park Golf Club). Unfortu- nately, no silverware this time. The team has high hopes for next season once all members of the regimental team return from operations.
As the season draws to a close, we are already looking for- ward to the next; the main effort being growing the game within the Regiment. One way the committee plan to do this is by conducting a golf tour for soldiers and officers of the Regiment. Options being explored are both UK and Europe based, depending on financial support. Hopefully, this will be significantly easier to execute due to the 1RHA golf commit- tee welcoming some significant support, the new Quarter Master Maj Dom Ian RHA and BK B Capt Ben Thomson RHA, both are avid golfers.
