The Henry VC Warrant Officers’
& Sergeants’ Mess WO2 (BSM) Harris
Since the last edition of the Regimental journal, the Henry VC Warrant Officers’ & Sergeants’ Mess has been a hub of activity, hosting numerous visits, functions, and welcom-
ing both new appointments and members. As the year has pro- gressed, the Mess has proudly welcomed WO2 (BSM) Ramage, who has assumed the role of BSM for E Battery. Additionally, WO2 (BSM) Harris has taken up the position of BSM for OHQ Battery (The Rocket Troop) as of 15 April 2024, succeeding WO1 (RSM) Byrne, who has moved on to become the Regimental Sergeant Major of 19 Regiment RA. The Mess also marked the departure of several esteemed members, including WO1 (ASM) Wyatt, WO2 Isles, SSgt Robson, and Sgt Sivo, who were hon- oured with a 22-year Dine Out. We also extend a warm welcome to Sgt Gurung, now serving as the Rear Link Sergeant for the Regiment, and WO2 Thompson, the newly appointed MTWO.
This summer, we welcomed back B Battery following their nine- month deployment to Estonia. After a well-deserved leave, they returned to duty, passing the baton to the Chestnut Troop, who have since departed for their deployment on Operation CABRIT. The Regiment eagerly anticipates their safe return in March next year.
On 9 July 2024, the Regiment had the honour of hosting the Chief of the General Staff’s briefing team. The Mess engaged in discus- sions covering a wide range of topics, including updates from Army HQ, pay scales derived from the Army’s defence budget, contract lengths, Army retention strategies, and ways to enhance battlefield lethality. A particularly ambitious plan was discussed,
detailing CGS’s vision to double the size of the Army by 2027, with a further expansion to triple its current size by 2030. The visit was well-received, concluding with a presentation from members of the RHQ to the CGS team.
The annual Summer Mess function on 27 July 2023 provided a much-needed break for all serving Mess members, allowing them to enjoy a memorable evening with their partners and friends. The event’s theme was Western, inspiring members to don cowboy attire and other Western-themed costumes. Organ- ised by SSgt Conner from REME Workshops and a small com- mittee, the evening featured line dancing lessons, which were thoroughly enjoyed by all. The event was a resounding success, executed with impeccable planning and attention to detail.
The Henry VC Warrant Officers’ & Sergeants’ Mess continues to be a cornerstone of camaraderie and excellence within the 1st Regiment Royal Horse Artillery, as it upholds the finest traditions of military service. The Mess is eagerly anticipating a series of upcoming events during the winter season. These will include the annual Christmas function, which promises to be a festive highlight. Additionally, the Officers to Seniors function is on the calendar, offering an opportunity for interaction between different ranks. The Mess will also come together to celebrate the results of the promotion boards, marking the achievements of those advancing in their careers. These events are sure to strengthen the bonds within the Mess and provide memorable moments for all involved.
