 Exercise LOST CADET
OCdt Hinton
In high spirits, and with slightly achy limbs, following the completion of the Intermediate Term and another series of parades at the
Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, the intrepid mountaineers of 5 Platoon, Inkerman Company, set out for the Lake District for a Winter Moun- taineering expedition.
Lodging in the picturesque town of Ambleside, we were soon out into the hills and mountains that cut like great scars across the scenic Lake- land valleys. Small, wall lined country roads took us high up hill sides (though not high enough for some) and from there we would park and walk to some of the most stunning vistas in the Brit- ish Isles.
Blessed with the full range of British weather, we walked through torrential rain, thick cloud, and occasional bright spots on our many days of
hiking. But most special was the first couple of days where an intemperate December had left the peaks snow-capped, allowing OCdt Morris (Jamaica) his first experience of snow. The nov- elty soon wore off, with more than a few spills on the climb down of the opposite side of the ridge.
This set the tone of the week for myself in par- ticular as I tumbled like a ragdoll down many of the steep paths that dot the landscape. What dented many of my personal possessions did not, however, dent my morale and we finished the week incredibly grateful and a much better team for the experience.
