me. We stood in stunned silence, while poor Aunt Anna looked on mysti ed by our reaction. I swallowed hard and managed to say, ‘Married, aunt? To whom?’ and her reply couldn’t have come as a greater shock.
‘Why to Miss Faulkner, of course. Who else could it be?
Who else indeed. I’m afraid my poor cousin fainted clean way at this news, while I cursed myself silently for my silly, girlish fantasies.
I shall return home in a few days’ time. My physical health is restored, but I’m afraid my ego will need more than a fresh sea breeze before it is mended.
