It has been a long couple of years with lockdowns and more lockdowns all due to COVID 19 the pandemic. Now that the Government have started to ease measures towards giving the economy a kick start we can all hopefully start to get back to a nor- mal routine and lifestyle, though there are still many who continue to feel vulnerable.
Having said that, the annual smoker in South Yorkshire ran by Steve Fretwell and his team provided another great weekend full of story telling, whilst putting the world to rights. Plenty of falling down juice was successfully devoured, followed by plenty of headaches. A turnout of some 88 attended over the weekend which saw an ice cream van join them bellowing out Balaclava to the amusement of all, every- one departed having enjoyed another fan- tastic weekend.
The annual reunion weekend went ahead at Barnsley Holiday Inn on 1-2 October. It started with the golf tournament on the Friday morning at the Silkstone Golf Club, then an evening in the hotel bar complete with buffet. The Friday evening is really
a success story for the Branch these days with many starting their weekend on this evening. Each year we run a small raffle which helps raise funds to cover the cost of the evenings buffet of pie and peas and curry. The raffle this year was a great suc- cess with Stuart Elliott winning the star
Steve Fretwell and his raffle prize
prize. The main event on Saturday was the Northern Reunion Dinner in the main function room, this year the Charitable fund subsidised the dinner with all attend- ing only paying £10.00 pp to dine, this to encourage our members and families to attend the dinner after almost two years of the pandemic and cancelled events, there were over 100 veterans and guests sat down to dine and 40+ in the bar who joined us all after the meal. We had the pleas- ure of the Lord Mayor of Barnsley Cllr Caroline Makinson and her Consort Barry Makinson join us with Major General Angus Watson and his wife Carrie attend- ing their first dinner since he took over as Colonel of the Regiment. After the meal the hotel offered us a happy hour in the function room, which encouraged those from the main bar to join the party. A good night was had by all and the main raffle on this evening was won by Steve Fretwell. We look forward to seeing you all again in 2022.
