A rare stretch of downhill track
As the sun rose on day two, we set off for the start point, ably chauffeured by LCpl Dean and Tpr Walker who had led the entire French column to our position. A further full day of mountain navigation through the alps led us to an abandoned fort, where our casualty drills were tested. Again the team excelled, scoring 100% but ‘acquiring’ the French stretcher in the process. As the finish point came into sight the team drove hard for the line, scrambling down the side of a cliff and cutting through a closed ski resort to save time and distance. With sore feet and backs, but a significant degree of pride the team ran over the finish line together, completing the 50km course in a very respectable time.
When the time awards/deductions for each stand had been calcu- lated, the team placed a well-deserved 4th of 12 entries, some of which had been in training for the competition for six months, narrowly missing out on a medal and kiss from the awarding Colonel in the process.
