HorsePower – The Museum of The King’s Royal Hussars
The Museum’s Board of Trustees play an important role in support of the Museum, guiding its direction, overseeing its governance and, inevitably, rolling up its collective sleeves to add a little horsepower during the current absence of sufficient vol- unteers. One person in particular should be mentioned here as it is with deep regret that we have lost one of our greatest hands-on trustees with the death of Col Mike Vickery OBE on 13 Dec 22. He was an energetic, intelligent and thoughtful supporter who happily volunteered his services whenever asked, and certainly routinely on the monthly volunteers’ day where his contributions were invaluable. Our deepest condolences go to his wife Suzie and three children Jonathon, Tom and Katie. Whilst on trustees, I would like to thank General Sir Adrian Bradshaw for his wise contributions and support of the Museum during his tenure as Regt Col and consequent appointment as an ex-Officio trustee, and I hope very much that his continuing interest can be relied upon. At the same time I would like to welcome his successor Brig Nick Orr who was previously a trustee and now returns as an ex- officio trustee as Regt Col. I look forward to working closely with him again. Finally, whilst still on trustees, our heartiest congratu- lations go to Jordan Wylie for his appearance in the New Year’s Honours List with the award of the MBE for his valuable work in education and charities.
In September we received the welcome news from Arts Council England that the museum had been awarded Full Re-Accreditation lasting for a further 5 years. Considerable work had gone into pre- paring for this so it was particularly gratifying as without it there is no public recognition of the strict governance underpinning the museum, and applying for grant funding without accredita- tion is likely to be unsuccessful.
Work progresses steadily but slowly due to a lack of staff and vol- unteers. The earlier plan to launch a fundraising campaign dur- ing 2022 was delayed due to the overall negative economic climate but momentum will be re-established in 2023. In the meantime, items held in the storeroom are being inspected, evaluated, and assessed for future use. The progress made this year has allowed us to return the external rented storage space and hold everything centrally within the HHQ building. An additional ISO container has been bought for the storage of some museum and other HHQ items which will be positioned within the KRH lines in Tidworth.
