as eight-years-old – and from lots of different countries. Michael was our first student. To be honest we were quite nervous: what if he didn’t like us? But he settled in quickly and stayed with us regularly all through his GCSE and A-level years. We even got updates and visits when he went to university, and he holidayed in the UK last year and made a point of coming to visit us.
What might a typical hosting weekend
look like? Weekends tend to be very relaxed.
As school can be very full on, it’s nice for the students to relax, take it easy, and even have a lie in. It can obviously depend on the age of the child, but in general they do not need to be kept
constantly entertained with a full programme of activities! Cooking and dog walks are always popular.
What is the most rewarding aspect of being a host? It’s great, not only for us as a host family but also for the students – we both get to learn about different cultures and customs, try new food and make wonderful lifelong connections.
