7 RIFLES
Patrolling to the ranges Ex SPEARPOINT 3
We undertook our Annual Deployment
Exercise in Northern Ireland. Ex SPEARPOINT
3 focused on enhancing operational
readiness through an intensive Live-Fire
Tactical Training (LFTT) programme. For
many Riflemen, this exercise marked a
career milestone, providing their first
experience of LFTT, significantly boosting
their confidence in their core infantry skills.
The deployment began with each company
travelling from their respective Army Reserve
Centres to Anzio Company, Newcastle and
then integrating with 5RRF and 3PWRR before
the onward journey.
The training package commenced with
individual weapon and pistol ranges, pistol
Annual Combat Marksmanship Test, and
Close-Quarter Marksmanship shoots, where
Riflemen honed their ability to seamlessly
transition between rifle and pistol.
Midweek saw another key milestone; the
safe operation and throwing of live grenades.
Although heavy winds, with an unwelcome
storm, disrupted some CQM ranges on the
Thursday, the battalion shifted focus to develop
and rehearse section SOPs to maintain
momentum.
The exercise culminated with live-fire
attacks at the fireteam, section, and platoon
levels, incorporating both rifles and live
grenades. These ranges tested Riflemen’s
teamwork and skills under realistic conditions,
strengthening their readiness for future
operations. The emphasis on communication,
rate of fire discipline, and effective use of cover
ensured that the battalion is better equipped to
face future challenges.
To conclude the deployment, the battalion
enjoyed two days of adventurous training and
cultural immersion. They explored Northern

Ireland’s rich heritage, visiting the iconic
Giant’s Causeway, a UNESCO World Heritage
Site, and Belfast. Activities such as hill walking,
fishing, rock climbing, and mountain biking
provided a refreshing break, while fostering
camaraderie and resilience within the unit.
Exercise SPEARPOINT 3 successfully met
its objective of progressing to platoon attacks
by day, showcasing the professionalism and
adaptability of 7 RIFLES. It not only refined
individual and collective skills but also
strengthened the bonds within the battalion.
The combination of rigorous exercise,
application of fundamental infantry skills,
and adventurous training highlighted the
battalion’s steadfast commitment to excellence
and readiness.
“This two week training package was a
fantastic opportunity to get my section out on
