AARP
Always A Rifleman Programme (AARP) Mentors Training
Gatekeepers play a vital role in supporting veterans as they transition
from military to civilian life, especially for those who served as
Riflemen. The AARP has noted an increase in participation from family
members of retired Riflemen in mental health first aid courses during
2024. This training empowers families to recognise and respond to
mental health crises, potentially preventing a serious issue from
escalating into a tragedy.
Throughout the year, John Barry and his dedicated team will continue
offering these essential courses across the UK. If you’re interested in
attending, or would like to know more, keep an eye on RIFLES social
media for updates on course dates. Alternatively, you can reach out by
emailing alwaysarifleman@the-rifles.co.uk for further information.
CRISIS RECOVERY
The AARP team, alongside their dedicated volunteers, plays a crucial role in preventing
veterans from falling into crisis. They travel the length and breadth of the country seven
days a week to connect with, advocate for, and negotiate on behalf of veterans in need.
However, this is only a small part of the invaluable work they do.
One particularly unique and impactful method used by the team is called Walling 2
Recovery. This activity takes veterans into challenging outdoor environments, where they
can reconnect with nature, build resilience, and experience a deep sense of achievement.
By engaging in these purposeful challenges, Riflemen gain not only a renewed sense of self-
worth but also the support they need to move forward with their lives.
