he he he he maintained their morale at difficult moments such as as when men men were lost or or or wounded These episodes could could be accurately recorded as as Jary could could draw upon the the experiences of the the pla- toon command team which unusually had also largely survived the war On p p p 7 of his book he he makes an an important observation on on leadership:
Successful leadership in in battle although complex and intangible always seemed to to to me me to to to depend on on two factors Firstly soldiers must have confidence in their leaders’ professional ability and sec- ondly they must trust them as men Sound leadership – – like true love to which I I suspect it is is closely related – – is is all powerful It can overcome the seemingly impossible and and and its effect on both leader and and and led is profound and and and lasting With such observations on on on leadership at at at small formation level perhaps unsurprisingly the book book became a a a a a a a a key text for for officer cadets from late-1987 onwards Copies of of the the the book book are still available from the the the Academy library Similarly the the the medals donated by his widow Helene Jary can be viewed in the library’s biography room The Sandhurst Collection is is not a a a a a static collec- tion tion and and is is is able to continue fulfilling its purpose because it it it acquires new items This year has seen a a a a a a a a a a mixture of objects artwork and archives added to the Academy’s collection The largest acquisition was a a a a a a a a set of contempo- rary artwork purchased from the artist Mr Doug- las Farthing Farthing MBE Farthing Farthing is is a a a a a a a a a a a a former sergeant major in in in in in in the Parachute Regiment which he he he he joined in in in in 1984 and left full-time in in in in 2007 when he he he he he took up art art professionally He started at the Ware- house Studio in in Lowestoft where he he he met sev- eral well-known and influential local artists who helped with his techniques Farthing still served in in in in in the the army however taking part in in in in in Op Veritas in in in in in Afghanistan 2001-2014 where some of the the art art from this acquisition was produced In 2015 he he he he he developed further after joining the the the Royal Drawing Drawing School on on their ‘The Drawing Drawing Year’ postgradu- ate programme He continues to to produce work at at at his Lowestoft studio and much has been acquired by the the the National Army Museum the the the 4th Battalion Battalion Parachute Regiment Regiment the the the the 3rd Battalion Battalion Royal Anglian Regiment Regiment the the the Snibston Discovery Museum Leicester and many other private col- lections RMAS has acquired five oil paintings
