After Sandhurst he he he joined the the 1st Battal- ion of the the the Grenadier Guards [] in in Decem- ber 1889 and and soon showed the the courage and and largeness of of heart which distinguished him all his his life by devoting much of of his his lei- sure to philanthropic work in in in in the East End – a a a a a a a a a a a striking manifestation of character in in in in a a a a a a a a a a a Guards Guards subaltern in in in in in those days Retir- ing from from the the Guards Guards in in in in 1897 from from that date until the the outbreak of war in in in 1914 he he he gave his time to sport travel and garden- ing He rode in in the company of of a a a a a a a a friend through a a a a a a wide part of of Morocco before the the the French or or or Spanish zones existed and he he he he he he shot game along the the the the the Dinder river in in in the the the the the Southern Sudan but gardening was the the the the passion of of his life and for many years he he he he he was on on the the Floral Committee of of the the Royal Horticultural Society Topographical Drawing: Preliminary Field Sketch ‘Survey of Barossa Hill’ by Hutchinson May 1878 At the outbreak of war though he he was was nearly 46 Warrender was was gazetted as as as lieutenant to the Reserve of Officers in in September 1914 he he he was appointed major in in in the 15th London Regiment Prince of Wales’s Own Civil Service Rifles He went to France in in in 1915 in in in command of of B B Company of of the 1st Bat- talion and and and less than five months after- wards was promoted to command the the battalion battalion During the the following year this battalion battalion greatly distinguished itself and Lt Col Warrender was mentioned four times in in dispatches In May the battalion was brought up in in a a a a a a a a a a a a a hurry from brigade reserve and and took a a a a a a a a a a gallant and and costly part in in the the effort to to retain the the Vimy Ridge In consequence of that action Lt Col War- render was awarded the the DSO on on on June 3rd In September of the the the same year under his command the the the the battalion helped to capture the the the the the famous High Wood in the the the the the first battle of the the the the Somme In the the the the follow- ing November he he he he was appointed Com- mandant of the 47th Divisional Offic- ers’ School at at Poperinghe and and later he he he he he served until the the the end of of of the the the war as rep- resentative in in Rome of of of the the the Ministry of of of Munitions He counted his friends – – and the the the name of them was legion – – in in the the the most differ- ent ent circles Though unassuming and reti- cent he had a a a a curious gift of impressing himself without conscious intention upon
