With the the resumption of sports sports at at RMAS after a a a a a long COVID-19 hiatus The Somme Company set out to “bring it home” in in in in the inter-company sports day The event involved rugby basketball tug of war football hockey cross-country and British Army Warrior Fitness competitions (BAWF) The rugby team got off to to an excellent start with a a a a a a a heroic end-to-end score from OCdt Matadigo of Fiji in in in in a a a a a a a a convincing 17-5 victory over our fellow Junior Term OCdts in in in in Gaza Company The team built on this excellent result with a a a a a a a a close fought 5-0 victory over Falklands Company – putting The Somme in in fin the the final and and the the only Junior Term team left Unfortunately due to unforeseen cir- cumstances Inkerman Company could not play contact rugby and The Somme ended up a a a a a a a a a a close second after a a a a a game of touch The Somme Company was even more dominant in in in in basketball than in in in in the the rugby only conceding one basket basket throughout the the entire tournament This was not a a a a a a a a massive surprise to to most given that we had the experience (and height) of our Rwandan OCdts Mr Mr Mr Nsengiyumva Mr Mr Mr Kagame and and Mr Mr Mr Udahamuka who all played the the sport to a a a a a a a a a high level whilst at at university in the the United States The Somme Company continued in in fin in in fine form into the hockey tournament Despite losing OCdt Logan early with a a a a a a a a a a a a nasty injury caused by a a a a a a a a a a a a fast- moving head-height hockey ball the team rallied brilliantly and finished an an an an an an excellent second place behind Inkerman Company Company – the Company Company who proved to be be our closest competition throughout the day In the the the the tug of of war the the the the team reached the the the the third / fourth playoff after losing their first bout but winning the the the rest in in in in the the the group stages Unfortu-

nately even bringing in in in the additional mass of Mr Mower as as as a a a a a a a a a a a substitute was not enough to beat the the Intermediate Term team team we we faced the the team team team finished a a a a a a a a a a slightly disappointing but very commendable fourth However the the the the team team was the the the the highest placed from from the the the the Junior Term and the the the the effort from from all members was incredible Unfortunately football did not go quite as as well as as the the the other events drawing one match and losing the the the the rest in in in in our our pool meaning we we got knocked out of the the the the tournament early on (we obviously had to to to lose something to to to keep the the the the other companies in in in the running!) The cross-country route was a a a a a a a a tough 8km run over Barossa Training area and we we were unlucky to miss out on on a a a a a a a a a a a podium spot The Company fielded a a a a a a a strong team with several good perfor- mances OCdt OCdt Sutton in in the the the top top ten and OCdt OCdt Norman in in in the the the the top top twenty The rest of the the the the Com- pany were placed in in in the the the the 30s and 40s – an an an an excel- lent result given the the 150+ runners taking part The day concluded with the the British Army War- rior Fitness final final event event With the the the whole Academy looking on and the the the final final event event counting for dou- ble points the the atmosphere was electric OCdts Barke Kay and and Peerless put in in fin in fin a a a a a a a a a herculean effort and and and The Somme finished first in fin in fin in the the final event securing them a a a a a a a landslide victory over all the the the other Company’s BAWF teams The The strong performances in in fin in all events com- bined with the the the final victory in in fin in in BAWF meant The The Somme Company clinched the the the the title of the the the the best sporting company across the the the the Academy We now face the the the challenge of defending our 1st place over the the next two terms SANDHURST
