The Romans were dead to them, and it was time to get the job done.
Despite Robin still droning on about ditches, vallum and walls, nothing was going to hold back the team. The Romans were dead to them, and it was time to
get the job done. Thankfully, today was rolling countryside,
much to Sgt Griffiths’ delight.
By this point, there was becoming less
of the wall visible, although we did come across a well preserved Roman Mithriac Temple, as well as more forts. In contrast
to Mithras, the weather was being kind to us, and we stopped for lunch at the scenic Whittle Dene reservoirs. We then soldiered on past Albemarle Barracks, where Ros Moore again appeared with Cake. The next stop was Dingle Dell Café in Heddon-on- the Wall, where we had a well-earned rest. The official Hadrians Wall path then leaves the wall and heads down to the river Tyne. We would not be reunited with the wall until Wallsend, and walked the pleasant downhill section to Tyneside Country Park. Whilst the majority of personnel were bussed back to Fenham Barracks, some of the older Warriors were left stranded in the Big Lamp Brewery. Well, when in Rome....
We all went out for a meal in Newcastle City Centre, before collapsing on the
floor of Fenham Barracks. It was nice to unexpectedly bump into Mel Bailey!
Day 5
Day 5 was in stark contrast to the early parts of the walk. We had swapped the countryside for an urban city scape. Its redeeming feature was that it was flat, and we made amazing time to get to Wallsend. We stopped for Brunch at the quayside, and then for Lunch at St Peters Basin. Without
a Turret in sight, it was clear we had left the wall behind, and it was a case of just getting the job done. Segedunum fort has
