in the park concert to bring our families together and commemorate Arnhem
75. Perhaps the biggest crowd pleaser was Pte Derbydos our stand-in mascot, although CSgt Webb’s Pioneer beard was a close second. I must also write about
our Drummers. We started our tour here in Cyprus without a Drums Platoon and in the space of one edition of the Mercian Eagle they have now put on displays in front of Commander British Forces, the President of Cyprus’ wife and at the Embassy in Amman, Jordan. They have individually been outstanding, but it is worth adding our thanks to the late, great and sorely missed Dougie Bridges whose legacy lives on in our Drums.
We have continued a rich vein of sports participation. The running team are unbeaten on the island, scooping up wins at all the major events but you name the event and we have given it a go; from open water swimming to skiing and cycling. The culmination to our sporting year was an outstanding Sports Awards Dinner where sports colours ties were awarded, and Cpl Silvers was awarded the sportsman of the year for his success in Armed Forces Tae Kwon Do.
We must also say thank you to several key personalities who have left us. James Ballard leaves as OC B (Malta) and Paul Goddard leaves us after a successful tour with Dragon Company in Afghanistan. The Regimental ‘Silver Backs’ have changed over with Den Spoors heading to AFC
and being replaced by Baz Mitchell who re-joins his son in the Battalion. RSM Kennedy has now handed over pace sticks to RSM Catherwood and as I write this,
we are saying farewell to both Adjutant and Operations Officer, Phil Anderson
and David Bell. There is never the space
to thank everyone, but what is abundantly clear is the strength of the Battalion is in its amazing people. Stand Firm - Strike Hard.
