I arrived on the Island in Aug 2018 after spending two and a half years at the
1st Battalion Irish Guards, which albeit challenging, proved a great chance to learn and grow. I certainly looked forward to a fresh start with the 2nd Battalion, The Mercian Regiment, in Episkopi Garrison.
As with all serving Royal Army Physical Training Corps Instructor’s (RAPTCI), the implementation of Army Physical Training System (APTS) and the new Physical Employment Standards (PES) presents both a challenge and an opportunity. We are very fortunate that there has been a significant amount of funds and effort spent on APTS equipment and the Physical Development (PD) facilities within Episkopi Garrison.
This has ensured a smooth transition to implement these vital changes ensuring that the Resident Infantry
Battalion (RIB) enjoys
beneficial years on
Island to improve their
PD.

competitions whilst still being competitive. To note a few, the Battalion has won the Station Commanders Cup, Dhekelia Dash, British Forces Cyprus (BFC) XC league, Aki
Football 7’s Plate, BFC Swimming Competition, and the contentious Cyprus Walk Down (fastest team). There have been other notable individual and team achievements across the sporting events,
and these have all been recorded onto the ever-growing Army
Sports Trophy Competition (ASTC) to which 2 MERCIAN are striving to win!
Alongside all the sporting achievements
2 MERCIAN have also hosted and delivered some key sporting events. These include the notorious Bay2Bay (one nautical mile swim from Happy Valley to MTW), the British Army Warrior Fitness (BAWF) at Lemming’s beach and the BFC Cross Country League. Administration and Safety is paramount when delivering such big events, especially when contending with the heat out in Cyprus. It is a credit to the organisations, not just 2 MERCIAN but Island wide when Units and departments are extremely busy and stretched, to pull off such large-scale events with professionalism and success.
