British Mountaineering Council
The British Mountaineering Council and Mountain Training collaborated to launch OutdoorHer, an innovative online platform offering practical advice and skills resources for women and girls in the outdoors. Supplementing resources on walking, climbing and scrambling skills, the new platform provides expert advice on gear selection, leadership, and breaks the taboo on subjects including ‘au naturel’ toileting, menstruation and the menopause.
Youth Hostel Association
The 13 September 2024 marks the start of the YHA’s annual Festival of Walking, a month-long initiative promoting healthy living and social connections. Participants are free to choose from a number of free guided walks or downloadable walking routes starting from one of over 50 hostels across England and Wales. Supporting this initiative, the BMC is asking for walk leaders to assist in five flagship walks taking place across Northern England.
Mountaineering Scotland
Organisers of the Scottish International Winter Climbing Meet are searching for volunteers to support the planning and delivery of next year’s running in the first week of March 2025. Building on a distinguished
25-year history and attracting climbers from across the world, the meet is a joint venture with the BMC, Scottish Mountaineering Club (SMC) and The Alpine Club. Volunteers and participants can register their interest at: https://www.mountaineering.scot.
Dartmoor National Park Authority
In early July, DNPA completed the two-year regen- eration of Wray Cleave, a wooden valley situated on the Eastern boundary of Dartmoor National Park near Moretonhampstead. With 275 hours committed to the 25-acre site, volunteers restored paths, steps, handrails, stiles, and gates, cutting back bracken and vegetation to reveal hidden granite tors, stone walls, and aged oak trees, bringing Wray Cleave back to its former glory.
Glenmore Lodge
Glenmore Lodge were proud to post on Instagram the start of their 2024 Summer Alpine programme with first-time Alpinists venturing to Switzerland for the Discover Alpine Mountaineering course. Other courses vary from 3-6 days including Alpine Prep, Swiss Technical Summits and Saas Fee Alpine Mountains 4000m. Courses are staffed by experienced and qualified IFMGA Mountain Guides with low Client to Guide ratios. Summer 2025 dates are now available through their website.
Kendal Mountain Festival
The team at Kendal Mountain Festival are working with major sponsors Osprey, Garmin and Rab, amongst others, preparing for the 2024 event running 21-24 November. Tickets go on sale in July with the festival promising to be an incredible weekend of speakers, films, books, art, activities and music. Following the main event, the ‘Spirit of Kendal’ goes on a nationwide tour in 2025.
Mountain Training
Mountain Training will host the second annual Women in Mountain Training conference at Outward Bound Ullswater on 2-3 November 2024. The event aims to develop understanding of women engaging in Mountain Training qualifications, provide networking opportunities, and share leadership experiences. Workshops will cover neurodivergence, navigation, gear placement, environmental issues, and group management with insights used to address the challenges women face in mountaineering.
