Field Sports
As we all know, due to restrictions last season and two of the three Squadrons being deployed on Op NEWCOMBE over most of this season, field sports as we know it have taken a bit of a hit. However, necessary pest control was always permitted under the governments guidance and as one can’t break any rules these days without facing serious sanctions that is what happened.
The murder of crows took a hammering in the rookery above the WOs’ and Sergeants’ Mess with various methods, including the use of a full size ladder trap that was knocked up from scratch and mounted clearance patrols in the Orderly Officer Tuk-tuk, all of which produced some good results.
The C Sqn Officers enjoyed a nice days shooting in Staffordshire on their return from Mali which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Next season will see the QDG Field sports back into full swing with Highland Eagle booked for September along with various shoot days later on.

B Sqn AT
Our Autumn AT commenced with a multi-activity week in the picturesque resort of Castlemartin. The week was designed to introduce ten students to wide range of AT offered in the Army in the hope that they would be inspired to specialise in at least one activity. On offer was rock climbing, hill walking and mountain biking. Hill walking not only blew away some navigational cobwebs but also allowed for some education on local flora and their uses in a survival situation. Mountain biking was by far the most popular as the Pembrokeshire countryside offered some challenging riding compared to the flats of Norfolk. Particular merit goes
to Tpr Shuttlewood who initially was
not a fan of the bike but soon got the
hang of it. Tpr Dempsey, Baker and Day
were very competent on the trails and
grasped the opportunity to get some
airtime. Tpr Baker, despite already
somersaulting off his bike earlier in the
day, slightly overcooked one of the
jumps and didn’t quite land on both
wheels. After a brief period of uncon-
sciousness followed by a murmuring to
Tpr Dempsey, “Am I dying?”, the Emer-
gency Services were called. They were
sadly in no rush and gave Tpr Baker 4
hours to reflect on how he could have
improved his landing whilst he clutched his ruptured kidney. Eventually an Air Ambulance arrived, Tpr Baker was in flight

to Cardiff Hospital and the remainder, undeterred, cracked on with the rest of the activities. Trooper Baker is recov- ering well at home and is keen to get back on his bike soon.
