Len, who died on 21st October 2021 aged 87, followed his elder brother into The Queen’s Bays in 1952 and who referred to young Len as “our Nipper”. Hence, he was always known Regimentally as Nipper thereafter.
Initially a National Serviceman he imme-
diately signed on for an extra year and
again in 1954 in order to go to Korea
with the Regiment. By then he had been
promoted to Sergeant – rapid progress
indeed. The tour to Korea was cancelled
so Nipper went with the Bays to Aqaba,
Jordan. In January 1956 he left for civilian
life only to be recalled to the colours in
August 1956 for the Suez crisis. He was posted to the Forward Delivery Squadron based in Tripoli, happily near to the Regiment now in Sabratha, Libya. His request to re-join for a full career was accepted.
On the amalgamation Nipper was a troop Sergeant in A Squadron. After a tour at the RAC Gunnery School, he served, in quick succession, in both B and A Squad- rons before going to Borneo with C Squadron as a troop leader in 1965. Another tour as a gunnery instructor, as
a SSgt, followed before Nipper re-joined the Regiment in Detmold as SQMS. By now his English paper was becoming a regular contributor to the ACE I examiners! Ultimately successful he was promoted to substantive SSM for his final two years at regimental duty. Throughout his service Nipper was utterly loyal, thoroughly dependable, steady, always forthright with his views and with a no nonsense approach to life. He played Hockey for the Regiment as well as most sports at Squadron level.
In 1971 he was promoted to WO1 and posted to the ATDU Bovington for three years and finally in 1974 as WO1 Range Squadrons, Lulworth. On retirement in 1977 Nipper took employ- ment with the DOE at Portland Naval Base holding several positions. Ultimately he was leading driver and then coxswain of the diving boat carrying out in-harbour
maintenance until 1993 when the DOE disbanded. Nipper is survived by his wife, June, and their family to
