                                 Welcome!
It gives me enormous pleasure to welcome you to the Defence Animal Training Regiment Open Day 2019.
Last year was a momentous one for the Royal Army Veterinary Corps as we celebrated the Centenary of the granting of our Royal prefix by King George V for services rendered during the First World War. 2018 also marked the milestone 100 years since the formation of the Royal Air Force. The Unit stands proudly on the edge of Melton Mowbray, and with over a hundred years of association with the town, we are throwing open our doors once again to demonstrate our work, and our role in the defence of this country.
This year, as well as a number of fantastic demonstrations in the main arena and informative displays around the site, there is a recognition of other organisations and charities that use animals in some way. Some benefit Military Working Animals directly, through the provision of advanced veterinary care or rehoming support to
our retiring horses and dogs. Some use animals to benefit the Defence Veterans community in many ways that are really quite remarkable.
There is lots to see and do, and I encourage you to explore the whole Equine area and do make your way up to the Veterinary Hospital to see the unique way they support Defence’s Military Working Animals. Please do seek out information and ask questions of any of the staff. They are all very passionate about the work they do, and proud of their role.
Finally, thank you for taking the time to come and visit us. I hope that you find it both a fun and informative day, and that you can walk away proud of the Service personnel, and all of our civilian staff, that work tirelessly in support of this country and it’s working animals. Your continued support is greatly appreciated.
