The start of any new course is always busy here at the Infantry Training Centre Catterick (ITC) however, this was even more so for
D Coy, Course 2101, who are piloting the new Combat Infanteers Course (CIC 21).
The course has been refined from CIC 18, enabling a better progression of training.
Trialling the new course provides a unique opportunity for D Coy, who, working under a spotlight, will need to be adaptive and inno- vative in order to learn, develop and achieve the intent. Preparation begins two weeks prior to the recruits arriving with both Company and Zero Weeks. The Coy week allows the
Training Teams to prepare the lines, training
resources and ensure the Permanent Staff (PS) have completed all the necessary Trainer Development required before the start.
Training Teams (TT) will then have to complete a Zero Week run by the Battalion. This is where PS attend briefs, conduct ROC Drills and rehearsals which cover all aspects of a course. The week culminates with a Back Brief to the CO, which includes TT’s analysis on any potential issues a course may face and to ensure TTs have adequately prepared ahead.
The initial 4 weeks are incredibly busy for TTs, from organising all the paperwork, medicals, clothing, drill to the recruit’s first fieldcraft exercises. These weeks allow the instructors to gauge each individual and

aspirations for joining the army. After the first four weeks you notice a considerable change in them, which is both rewarding and relieving for the instructors!
Course 2101 is currently in Week 6. They are preparing for the final introduction exercise, which must be passed in order to progress through training. The recruits will be tested on everything they have learnt over the past five weeks and include individual Fire and Manoeuvre to their Personal Administration in the field. While the final product is still a long way off, they are inching towards being fully trained, robust and prepared for any future challenges they will face in the Field Army. Capt W W Forman 3 RIFLES

hills. The exercise culminated with a final attack through a subterranean tunnel system onto a disused bomb factory followed by a congratulatory breakfast before disembarking to their respective units.
On the horizon we have just stood up the pilot course for the new Combat Infanteers Course 2021 Syllabus which is more progressive and demanding. This is a fantastic opportunity to shine for D Company where our Regi-
mental ethos of being the most adaptive and innovative Infantry Regiment in the British Army should stand us in good stead to help shape the ‘new model’ Infanteer of the near future. Capt A E Norman 2RIFLES
