Blessed Peter Wright (1603-1651) Thrapston Catholic Martyr
St Paul’s Church, Sackville Street, Thrapston will be commemorating the death of Northamptonshire’s last Catholic Martyr, Father Peter Wright who was born locally in Slipton in 1603 and died
in London on the Tyburn gallows on
19th May 1651, condemned for being a practising Catholic Priest.
Having grown up in Slipton, Peter came to work as a clerk in a solicitors office in Thrapston, probably in Chancery Lane. He came from a well known ‘Recusant’ family - those designated as Papists for refusing to attend the Protestant Church services. Having lost his job he joined the army and soon found his way abroad where, leaving
military service, he was accepting into a Jesuit Seminary to train as a Catholic priest.
On his return to England he ministered in secret to the recusant Catholic community in London until he was eventually arrested and tried for treason, not acknowledging the Monarch as the Head of the Church in England.
Having now a small devotional reliquary, St Paul’s Church has adopted Blessed Peter Wright as the local Catholic Martyr with a commemorative Mass being
held every May which this year will be celebrated at 7pm on Wednesday 22nd May. All are welcome to attend.
During the Thrapston Arts Festival week the church will be open from 10am – 4pm every day to give you the opportunity to visit our lovely building. The Yarn Bombers are preparing a treat for us too! Thrapston Primary School children will be putting on a free concert in the church at 4pm on Thursday 6th June. Everyone welcome.
