CADET'S CANINE RESCUE
On 8th August 2020, Strensall Detachment cadet, Zak Gregory, was out with friends in the village of Haxby, five miles north of York. At the same time, while walking in the nearby Landing Lane area, near the River Foss, Zak’s sports coach Mr Dias spotted a couple trying to coax their dog out of the river. When he returned some time later, the tiring dog was still in the water and the couple were becoming worried about its health. Zak’s coach
alerted the boys to the situation, and they responded promptly.
After assessing the situation, 13-year-old Zak entered the water safely. Under the watchful eye of Mr Dias,
he approached the
dog to reassure it,
then caught the
lead thrown to him
by Mr Dias and
attached it to the
dog’s collar. Using
the lead, Zak was
then able to rescue
the family pet by leading
it out of the water and
returning it to its grateful
owners. Mr Dias congratulated
the young cadet and informed his father what had happened. Proud
dad, Mr Gregory, told us, “Since joining the cadets...Zak’s mindset and confidence have changed dramatically, making us very proud parents.”
Strensall Detachment’s Commander, Lt Mike Richardson, was also very impressed by the young cadet’s actions. “Cadet Gregory is an excellent example of the public-spirited nature of our membership, not only at this detachment, but also in B Company, and in the rest of the County. Through subjects such as Cadet in The Community and First Aid, we teach our young people that they can achieve more, and go further, by making a positive contribution to their communities.”
PADRE PERERA'S PEDALLING PROJECT
Last month, Yorkshire (North &West) ACF's Padre George Perera undertook a tough cycling challenge.
He realised that Covid-19 restrictions
would mean that the 75th anniversary of VJ Day (marking the end of WW2) on the 15th of August would not be recognised as fully as the occasion deserved. As a result, he decided to embark on a 75 mile cycle ride in the Widnes/ Liverpool/Southport area on Saturday the 15th. He decided to seek sponsorship in aid
of Combat Stress - a great project for a very worthy cause. He set himself the financial target of £300, but that was quickly exceeded. With donations still arriving in September, the total then stood at £475!
The below picture shows him getting some valuable practice before the Big Event!
