 Above and Beyond
SI Emma Barraclough from E Company was faced with a situation that many of us prepare for but are hopeful we will not have to face. SI Barraclough provided a fellow Adult Volunteer outside of the Army Cadet Force with immediate first aid after a potential life changing accident.
Using the first aid training gained within the ACF received both as a cadet and as an Adult Volunteer, she provided first aid until the ambulance arrived to take over the care. Thanks to her swift actions our colleague has recovered and is back on their feet.
Emma said “First aid within the ACF is very important and vital to me, unfor- tunately not everyone gets to learn it. However, thankfully it is a subject that the cadets get taught all the way through their career which is a key skill they can carry throughout their lifetime. Although you cannot be truly prepared for these situations, my training really kicked in that day due to the confidence from first aid training”.
 HSY SETTING
THE GOAL
POST
Since the cease in face to face training, Humberside and South Yorkshire County Sports Officer, 2Lt Liz Millard, has been leading the way with her weekly challenges for the county. It has been a great success with both Adult Volunteers and Cadets getting involved.
The challenges has been far from dull and have included “In one minute, how many times can you bounce a tennis ball on alternate sides of a frying pan?” and “To do at least 3 workouts in 7 days of at least 30 minutes.”
Humberside & South Yorkshire has also participated in National challenges including the “Army Cadet Cycle Challenge”, where each participant had 4 weeks to Cycle 300 Miles! We have had some outstanding efforts from both Cadets and Adult Volunteers.
The National Mile Run, Humberside &
South Yorkshire had over 40 Cadets and
Adult Volunteers take part in this challenge. Cadet Corporal Joe Etherington attained 36th Nationally with his time of 5 Minutes 43 Seconds. AUO Liz Drury achieved first place within HSY
at a time of 7 Minutes 14 seconds. Finally, HSY Commandant Colonel Steve Emerson was the fastest Nationally within his age category with a time of 7 Minutes 56 Seconds.

CVQO success for BTEC Officer
For the last two years, SI Jan Clark, the County BTEC Officer has not only been working hard to ensure our cadets get their qualifications; she too has been working to gain her own.
Recently she received confirmation that she has gained her Level 5 City & Guilds Affiliateship in Leadership and Management.
Jan said: “I have worked with the cadets
helping them to reach out and gain their awards,
and their keenness to learn inspired me to take
the step and gain my own qualification. I never thought I’d be capable of achieving anything like this. The cadets have definitely inspired me.” Jan went on to say “I didn’t get the exam passes I was expecting when I was at school, I thought my time had passed. But joining the Army Cadet Force opened up my eyes to what is on offer for adult volunteers, I am so glad I took that step out of my comfort zone.”
Jan mentioned that recently she has arranged for 25 adult volunteers to join on the Adult Education Training course. This is a BTEC Level 3 to help step into the lines of teaching and can progress forwards onto a Level 4 and Level 5 Course.
If you are inspired by Jan’s story and you want to see what CVQO can offer you, visit their website at www.cvqo.org for information on their courses.
