MIRFIELD AIR
CADETS: "TRY
THIS AT HOME"
It’s difficult to engage in Fieldcraft activities during the Covid 19 lockdown and suspension of face-to- face activities for Air Cadets. Nevertheless, in order to maintain some level of involvement cadets at 868 (Mirfield) Squadron were given a challenge to do one or more of the following tasks and get pictures of the completed task to send to the squadron:
1. Build an improvised shelter for yourself (using basic materials, basha, ground sheet or whatever comes to hand)
2. If you haven't got enough space for a full-scale shelter build a scaled down version for an Action Man/Barbie, or another model
3. Practice the different types of movement in the field, Monkey Crawl etc
4. If you have cam-cream at home, practice camouflage
Obviously, cadets were told to get permission
to work in the garden (don't build in the vegetable patch!), and pointers to some video links on YouTube were identified to give them some ideas.
The prize on offer for the best effort comprised a basha, basha pole and bungees, paracord and pegs to set it up with.
The pictures received showed some commendable effort, there was even one from a lesser known
“Sgt Quackers”. The entries were all considered
by squadron commander Flight Lieutenant Peter Doubell and Cadet Warrant Officer Kiara Baillie, who eventually decided on Mitchell Breare as the overall winner, but all participants were awarded a prize of either camouflage cream or a pocket survival tool.
Flt Lt Doubell said, after the judging, “we’ve had some great entries for this competition and decision making was very difficult, but we decided that Mitchell Breare’s entry was the closest to the spirit of what we originally envisaged. There were also some very innovative and inspired ideas and really everybody deserves praise for their efforts.”
The pictures show the selection of entries for the competition and the prize (assembled).
