Sewing together – Caroline Hankins shares her love of quilts
I have been doing patchwork and quilting now for about 18 years, mainly self-taught, but have been on many workshops to learn new techniques.
I donated a lap quilt for the last charity auction. Susan Page placed the winning bid. I offered to teach her so that she could make her daughter, Heather, one for Christmas. She made a beautiful reversible quilt. Susan’s work is impeccable. This led onto me asking her if she would like to help make a quilt for the next auction. I had rather a large ‘stash’ of material, so we decided to make a king-size quilt.
We decided to use the pattern called ‘disappearing 9-patch’ which can incorporate any amount of colour. In February 2018, Susan and I started meeting every Monday afternoon. The quilt needed 378 x 6" squares cutting. Our backs did ache! We met every Monday afternoon – with a break during the summer – finishing
the end of April 2019.
I have really enjoyed making this quilt with
Susan and I think Susan has enjoyed making it too. However, I have never known a pupil understand the pattern better than her teacher! Needless to say, I have yet to make a quilt for myself.
The quilt will be auctioned on the 28th September 2019 in St James’s Church.
