shows, musical entertainments and plays, usually held in the Corn Market Hall. On 17th October 1918, just before the Armistice, a travelling cine-film company showed pictures of the World War 1 battlefields to a large crowd in the Market Place, the screen being part of the White Hart Hotel wall.
In 1923 the Thrapston, Raunds District Almanack & Directory, as well as listing all the residents names and addresses, gave a comprehensive list of local organisations:
Thrapston Adult Schools each Sunday (Men 9am, Women 2.45pm); Chicheley Lodge Freemasons; Lilford Lodge Mark Master Masons; the Independent Order
of Rechabites (130 members); St James Football Club; Thrapston United Football Club; Thrapston & District Bowls Club; Thrapston & District Tennis Club; Thrapston Society for the Discussion of Public Questions; Thrapston Christmas Fat Stock Show; Thrapston Shire Horse Society; Thrapston Institute; and Thrapston, Islip & Denford Nursing Association.
You could also take music lessons available with one of the six local teachers.
This issue of Jigsaw is published on Charter Fair day. In 1967, Thrapston Feast Week attracted a large number of floats constructed on lorries, the one shown leaving Sackville Street. This float was raising money to build a swimming pool in town which was opened in 1972 beside King John School on Market Road. A future “Glance at the Past” will cover the 32 years of this predecessor of the Nene Centre. (Picture from the Denis Barber archive held at Thrapston District Historical Society).
