Upon completion of the ATI resilience margin (ReM) in October 20, I was posted to JSMTW Indefatigable as an Adventurous Training Instructor (ATI). The ReM is a six-
month AT package, designed to prepare potential ATIs for their future roles within Army Adventurous Training Group.
I arrived at the Joint Service Mountain Training Wing (Indefatigable) in Nov 20 where I delivered four weeks of training. The following week we were back into another COVID lockdown. This was very frustrating having just started my dream job, but on the flip side I got to spend all that time with my family. Fast forward four months later, I was knee deep in snow, Winter climbing in Snowdonia. Crampons on, ice axe in hand and my hair frozen – What a life! This is the job I had come to do and I was loving every minute of it. Dream amplified in July, I was hanging off a sea cliff climbing in the sunshine and going on some epic wild mountain bike rides. Just last week after spending a month in JSMTW Bavaria, I returned as a newly qualified Ski Leader. We have a great group of instructors working in North Wales. We often come together after work or on the weekends to climb, paddle, mountain bike or scramble. Always learning and pushing each other, it creates a very healthy atmosphere to be a part of.
The road to success was not always plain sailing, I received a deferral on my rock-climbing Instructor course. Being a keen climber, the result hit me hard to begin with, but after a few days to reflect and some words of wisdom from my fellow instructors, I accepted the fact its okay to fail. With this setback I was able to learn from my mistakes and can now pass this experience on to my students on future courses. This experience has developed me into a better instructor, which I take great pride in.
Which leads me on nicely to Adventurous Leadership & Resilience Training (ALeRT), which now plays a huge role within AT. After attending the course, I realised that AT is not just about learning new skills and taking risks in a controlled environment, it can also be used to help the student identify his or her strengths and weaknesses. Which they can then use and implement in their place of work.
The ReM did set me up well for my posting to JSMTW (I). But I feel the real learning for me is on the job and this has just begun. For each course I teach, I’m constantly learning different things as I go and adapting my teaching to different needs. My personal skills in each discipline have improved, which has developed me into a better ATI.
